Hillside deck replacement in the East Bay.

Orinda · Berkeley · Piedmont · Alamo · Danville

A hillside deck replacement starts below the boards. Rhodes Construction plans and builds elevated decks with the foundation, framing, connection to the house, railings and stairs considered together. Rick and JT work with East Bay homeowners to define a rebuild that suits the slope, access, layout and condition of the existing structure.

Boards or a full rebuild?

A surface replacement keeps suitable framing and supports; a full rebuild addresses the structure as well. We review the existing conditions and the proposed materials before deciding which approach belongs in your estimate.

02

Framing & foundations

Plan supports, beams, joists and connections as a coordinated system. Where engineering or geotechnical input is required, that work informs the construction scope. Footing size and depth are specific to the project.

03

Railings, stairs & finish

Choose Trex composite, PVC or wood decking with coordinated metal, cable or wood railing options. We consider the view, door access, stair route, board layout and finish details together.

The questions we ask on a hillside.

How can demolition debris leave the site, and how will framing, concrete and decking reach the work area? Are there stairs, narrow side yards, landscaping or adjacent structures to work around? Access can materially change the labor and equipment needed for two otherwise similar decks.

We look at the deck's connection to the home, the condition of the existing supports, visible drainage concerns and the route of the new stairs. Conditions that cannot be confirmed before opening up the work are identified in the scope rather than assumed away.

If your deck is visibly moving, sagging or pulling away from the house, keep people off it and arrange an on-site assessment. Photos can help us understand the project, but they do not establish whether a structure is safe.

Compare estimates on the same scope.

A useful deck estimate separates demolition and disposal, site access, foundations, posts and framing, decking, fascia, railings and stairs. Engineering, plans, permit fees and any work at the house should also be clearly accounted for or identified as separate.

Ask what remains and what is replaced. Reusing old footings or framing is a different project from rebuilding them. Ask how concealed deterioration, changed selections and additional work will be handled before the project starts.

For an initial conversation, send overall dimensions, approximate height, stair and railing lengths, photos taken from safe locations, and existing plans or reports if available. We use this to discuss the site visit and scope needed for a detailed estimate.

Designed for how you use the space.

Replacing a deck is an opportunity to review the layout. We discuss dining and seating areas, circulation from the house, stairs to the yard and how railings affect the view. Free 3D renderings help you compare the layout and finishes before construction.

Our East Bay service area includes Danville, Alamo, Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Berkeley, Piedmont and nearby communities. We also take elevated-deck inquiries in Truckee and Tahoe, where the site's mountain conditions are part of planning.

Before we build

Your project questions.

Do you rebuild large elevated decks?

Yes. Elevated decks, hillside sites and structural deck work are part of our services. Send the location, approximate size and existing condition so we can discuss the project's scope, access and engineering needs.

Does new composite decking fix structural problems?

No. New deck boards do not repair damaged framing, deteriorated supports or deficient connections. The underlying structure must be assessed before a resurfacing scope is agreed.

Can you repair dry rot discovered during the project?

We handle dry rot repairs and exterior renovations. The affected area and source of moisture need to be reviewed, and any additional work is defined in the agreed scope or a written change before proceeding.

Can you give me one price per square foot?

We can discuss a preliminary budget, but a firm estimate needs the actual scope. Height, foundations, engineering, access, railings and stairs can change costs substantially even where deck areas match.

Do you build decks in Danville and Alamo as well as Lamorinda?

Yes. We serve Danville, Alamo, Diablo, Blackhawk, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, as well as Berkeley, Piedmont and the surrounding East Bay.
